Opening Speaker Dr. Bill McBride

Bill McBride is a well-known national speaker, educator, and author.  A former middle and high school teacher and reading specialist, Bill presently trains teachers both nationally and internationally in content area reading methodologies, student motivation, and teaching to gender differences.  He has contributed to the development of a number of school textbook series in Language Arts, Social Studies and Vocabulary Development.  He is also known for his heartwarming novel Entertaining an Elephant.  Already in its eighteenth printing and used by school districts across the nation, the book tells the moving story of a burned-out teacher who becomes re-inspired with both his profession and his life.  His other books include Building Literacy in Social Studies, If They Can Argue Well, They Can Write Well, and his latest book, the much anticipated sequel to Entertaining an Elephant entitled Carrying a Load of Feathers.

Author Luncheon Speaker, Roland Smith

Roland Smith is a zookeeper turned children's author who has carved a niche for himself both in nonfiction and fiction with such award-winning titles as Sea Otter Rescue, Journey of the Red Wolf, Thunder Cave, Jaguar, and Sasquatch. Blending action and adventure with accurate scientific detail, Smith's fiction has been praised by critics and applauded by young-adult readers, while his nonfiction works are marked by readability and feature detailed insider information told in an accessible manner. "When you read his books," a Storyworks writer noted of Smith's work, "you almost feel like you're inside the story, seeing through the eyes of his characters."

Born in Portland, Oregon, Smith formed a love of reading and writing early in his life.  After graduating from high school, Smith attended Portland State University, studying English and biology. A work-study program led to part-time work at the Portland's children's zoo, which he thought might provide some interesting material to write about. Instead, the program led to a more-than-twenty-year career in zoo keeping, first at Portland's main zoo, and then at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, Washington, where Smith became general curator and assistant director, as well as senior research biologist. While working as a zookeeper and research biologist, Smith never lost his love of writing, and he spent time early each morning teaching himself the basics of the writing craft.  As Smith notes on his Web site, "My writing led me to animals and my work with animals led me back to writing.”

Todd pic
Author Luncheon Speaker, Todd Strasser

Shortly after Todd was born (in New York City) his parents moved to Roslyn Heights, New York (Long Island). Todd went to the I.U. Willets Elementary school and then attended the Wheatley School for junior high and high school. His best subject was science. He also liked to read, but had difficulty with spelling and grammar, and struggled in English. His favorite sports were tennis, skiing, and fishing.

Todd went to college at New York University for a few years, and then dropped out. He lived on a commune, then lived in Europe where he was a street musician. All the while, he wrote songs and poems and lots of letters to his friends back home. After returning to the United States he studied literature and writing at Beloit College.

After college, Todd worked as a reporter at the Middletown Times Herald-Record newspaper in Middletown, New York, and later at Compton Advertising in New York City. In 1978, he sold his first novel, Angel Dust Blues, and used the money to start the Dr. Wing Tip Shoo fortune cookie company. For the next 12 years, Todd sold many more fortune cookies than books.

In 1990, Todd moved to Westchester County, N.Y. He is the author of more than 120 books for teens and middle graders including the best-selling Help! I'm Trapped In ... series, and numerous award-winning YA novels including The Wave, Give A Boy A Gun, The Accident, Can't Get There From Here, Boot Camp, and If I Grow Up.

His newest series for grades 3 - 6 is The Tardy Boys.

Several of his books have been adapted for television and his novel How I Created My Perfect Prom Date became the feature release Drive Me Crazy. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages, and he has also written for television, newspapers, and magazines such as The New Yorker, Esquire, and The New York Times. Todd now divides his time between writing books and speaking at schools and conferences. When he's at home, he likes to spend time with his children, fish, play tennis and ski, but his favorite new sport is surfing.
